On the seventh anniversary episode of Events Demystified Podcast, Anca Platon Trifan explains how AI bias and stereotyping are amplified through generative and predictive systems, starting with her experience using NotebookLM to generate an image from her memoir: it repeatedly depicted AV expertise as male, then portrayed a woman as overly aggressive. She argues AI bias didn’t start with AI but with historical data shaped by discrimination, exclusion, and stereotypes, and shows how models can reproduce institutional patterns through proxies even when protected traits are removed. Examples include Amazon’s abandoned recruiting tool, unequal human evaluation of identical AI-assisted resumes, healthcare liver-disease models missing more cases in women, Gender Shades misclassification rates, speech recognition disparities, and COMPAS fairness disputes. She emphasizes accountability for leaders adopting AI, meaningful “human in the loop,” transparency, appeals, monitoring, and examining default assumptions in AI outputs.
